Essay on Understanding the Sociology of Health - 1980 Words

Health can be defined in three different ways; negatively, positively and holistically as well as contextually, that will differ from person to person. The English word for health is derived from the old English word ‘hale’ meaning â€Å"Wholeness and wellness†, in this essay I will be exploring the different definitions, views and models of health. The World Health organization defines health as â€Å"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.† Firstly the negative definition equates to the lack of any disease or body abnormalities, or an pessimistic outlook due to illness, disease (both physical and mental) or injury. Examples of this would be a soldier who lost†¦show more content†¦this model includes six sections that cover the physical, mental and social well being aspects of a person’s health these are; Physical - Physical aspects of health or physical wellness is concerned with the aspects that the individual takes to achieve and maintain optimal physical health through the combined efforts of beneficial activities (ie. exercise) and a positive view of diet and food as well as healthy eating habits. This aspect empowers the individual to take responsibility to take care of their own health such as caring for themselves through minor illnesses and knowing when to seek professional medical attention. While the individual is empowered to take these steps they may have little or no control of them if they suffer from an condition such as anorexia. Mental - Mental health is described by the World Health Organization as â€Å" state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully† and typically covers topics regarding the happiness derived from work , relationships, family and life in general. Previously stigmatized in society , ferm links have been establish between mental health effecting physical health, in which the holistic approach , similar to the social model, draws attention to the root cause of the condition and its triggers.
